Assassination attempt on Ortom is a coup on democracy-MBF

***Forum threatens to break away from Northern hegemony

The Middle Belt Forum (MBF) has described the recent attack on Governor Samuel Ortom of Benue State by Fulani armed bandits as a coup on democracy.

This was contained in a communique signed by the National President of the MBF, Dr Pogu Bitrus and the Chairman of the Elders’ Council of MBF, Air Commodore Dan Suleiman (retd).
The communique which is the outcome of a meeting that was attended by elders and leaders from all the 14 states of the Middle Belt Region and the FCT, expressed shock at the reckless, daring, audacious and brazen attack on Ortom.

The communique described the attack as a declaration of war, stressing that such assault was aimed at overwhelming “the Governor and the entire democratic structure in that State which is a coup D’état.”
The Forum categorically affirmed that the “indigenous peoples of the Niger Area and Benue Valley hereby give notice that it is no longer comfortable in the unhappy marriage for the convenience of the Arewa. It expressed its readiness and preparedness to forge ahead as an entity of its own or in alliance with other groups/regions who are prepared to cast off the chains of Fulani hegemony.”

The Forum expressed dismay at the incapacity of security agents to apprehend Miyetti Kyauta Hore accused to have masterminded the attack, warning that sending a “detachment of operatives to investigate a crime whose perpetrators are known” was not enough response from the Federal Government.
The Forum commended the Nigerian Governors’ Forum and Governor Nzenwo Wike who warned that the nation risked disintegration if any harm were to befall Governor Ortom; a position that “is in tandem with that of the Middle Belt Region.”Insisting that either “on account of incompetence or collusion,” the Federal Government “has failed in its primary constitutional responsibility of protecting lives and property of Nigerians, leading to the takeover of the Nigerian space by merchants of death, kidnappers, rapists and other brigands,”
The Forum therefore resolved that “The Middle Belt Region stand solidly behind His Excellency, Governor Samuel Ortom in his brave and courageous defence of the people of Benue State from the persistent and unending attack by Fulani marauders whose open agenda is the Fulanisation of Nigeria, in general and the occupation of the Benue Valley, in particular. It warned the marauders and their sponsors that if any harm were to befall Governor Ortom that incident will be a declaration of war on the indigenous peoples of the Middle Belt which will be repelled with all1 the fury and force at their disposal.”
The meeting also appealed to the “indigenous peoples of the Middle Belt to take urgent and deliberate steps to protect themselves and their communities from these merchants of death, kidnappers, rapists and marauders; and to resist all attempts by the Federal Government and security agencies to disarm them and render them easy pickings for these killer machines.”

According to the communique, “The conditions that led to the demand for the creation of a separate region for ethnic nationalities within the Middle Belt Region at the Willinks Commission in 1948 are still with us, and only surpassed by an urgency borne out of desperation, making the severing of the Lugardian umbilical cord binding Nigerians imperative. This the Forum deduced from the recent declassification of British colonial documents that revealed that the Northern Regional Government, the Northern Peoples’ Congress and British colonial officers played conspiratorial roles in subjugating the rights of ethnic nationalities in the Middle Belt  to serve the interest of Fulani oligarchy.”

AESID to Police, DSS: Mop up illegal arms in circulation in Ebonyi

Association of Ebonyi State Indigenes in the Diaspora (AESID) has called on all the security agencies to urgently mop up all the illegal arms and ammunition in the hands of unauthorised persons, especially political thugs in the state.

The association revealed that it has gotten information on how some top politicians have shared illegal weapons for some political thugs to cause mayhem in the state.

In a statement released Tuesday in Abuja by the AESID President, Paschal Oluchukwu, urged the security agencies to step their game in protecting innocent citizens and opposition elements in Ebonyi state.

“We urge the new IGP to kindly investigate these allegations and not only recover such arms from such unauthorized citizens but also adequately protect the lives snd businesses of opposition leaders and members and indeed, all those opposition political parties in Ebonyi from the planned onslaught against them.

“We therefore urge the security agencies in the state to act professionally and protect all citizens of the state from the common internal and external aggressors cum attackers. For as we have always maintained, Ebonyi will yet exist beyond the over 700 days that Governor Umahi has to stay put in the Government House, Abakaliki.

“The Governor and his so-called ruling party should therefore learn to live, and let live and learn how to face governance and accountability to the people, not playing politics with every matter, no matter how delicate or life threatening there may be.”

The group said it condemn the recent view expressed on a national Television by a Commissioner for Border and Internal Security, Stanley Okoro, where he alleged blamed the worsening insecurity in the state on the opposition leaders.

“Like the proverbial bad carpenter who often blames the nails and never the hammer for all his woes, Okoro Emegha was only concerned about absolving his paymaster from the blames of insecurity in Ebonyi and setting up leaders of opposition for violent attacks from the agencies of government.

“AESID outrightly condemns this posture of a government that has only given Ebonyians the pains and agonies of blood-letting attacks since it claimed to have connected the state to the centre.”
