INEC declares former chief of Air staff winer of Kogi East Senatorial rerun election

The Idependent National Electoral Commission late yesterday evening declared AVM Isaac Alfa of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) winner of the Kogi East Senatorial re-run election.

Alfa who was a former chief of Air Staff polled 57, 575 votes to defeat five other candidates.
A judgement of the Appeal Court had banned the All Progressives Congress ( APC) and its candidate from participating in tge elwction.

Prof. Lucky Ovwhasa the returning officer in the election declared Alfa winner having polled the highest number votes.

He indicated that the candidates of ACPN, KOWA, MPPP, UPP and the Labour Party scored 1,793 , 888, 498, 349 and 11,908 votes respectively in the election.

The senatorial rerun election was held in eight out of the nine local governments in Kogi East senatorial district that included Bassa, Dekina, Ankpa, Olamaboro, Ofu, Idah, Igalamela/Odolu and Ibaji.

The election was held in 236 out of the 1,080 policing units in the senatorial district while only 140, 297 out of the 643,559 registered voters in the area participated in the election. A total of 1, 390 personnel conducted the election.

The Returning Officer of the Idah state constituency re-run election , Prof. Femi Ajayi had late Saturday evening declared Hon. Haruna Idoko of the APC as the winner of the election for polling the higgest number if votes.

Idoko scored 8,346 votes to defeat his closest rival, Hon. James Ukwubile of the PDP that polled 8,274 votes.

The result of Ofu state constituency re-run election was still being awaited at the time of filling the report.

Sequel to the second rerun election for the Kogi East senatorial district INEC indicated that it was abiding by the court judgement that recognized Air Vice Marshal Isaac Alfa as PDP candidate following the disqualification of Senator Attai Aidoko the party’s candidate in the national Assembly election and the earlier rerun in February.
It would also be recalled that a Federal High Court sitting in Abuja had on May 10 affirmed Alfa as the PDP candidate for the inconclusive senatorial election for the Kogi East senatorial district.
The court’s declarative judgment by Justice Nnamdi Dimgba was sequel to a stay of execution application filed by Sen. Attai Aidoko on an earlier judgement of the court asking him to stop parading himself as the candid)ate of the PDP for the election.
The rerun election on February 20th 2016 was declared inconclusive on the bases that violence in some polling units disenfranchised some voters hence the new date of 23rd July, 2016 for the repeat of the rerun in those units.
The first rerun that took place February 20th, 2016 was held due to the court of Appeal judgement that nullified the election of the APC candidate Abdul Abdulraman who won the National Assembly election for Kogi East senatorial district in the March 28th general election where it ordered a rerun on the ground that he was not properly nominated.
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) had announced the exclusion of APC from the rerun election in to the Senate for Kogi East Senatorial district and Ofu State constituency based on the court judgement.
