NUJ President urges protection of media practitioners for survival of democracy

By Friday Idachaba
National President of Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Mr Chris Isiguzor, has called on Government at all levels to recognise the role of media and protect media practitioners for sustainable of democratic governance in the country.

Isiguzor made the call at the Grand Final of the Grand Finale of the 2020 Press Week organised Kogi state Council of NUJ on Thursday in Lokoja.

The NUJ President said that governments at Federal, State and Local Government levels must appreciate the fact that media played a vital role in the delivery of good governance and in the survival of democratic governance.

“In the absence of the media democracy is imperilled. The media remains the oxygen of a working, thriving, responsible democratic governance.

“What some of the leaders do not know is that if you destroy the media you have in advertently destroyed democratic governance.

“It is true that if you want to excel you must have to allow the media to be your friend, you must have to allow the media to remain, the media is strategic stakeholder in the stakeholding process.

“If you continue to treat them as, “We versus them”, if you will continue to treat them as guests to governance, if you continue to treat them as foreigners we are not helping this democracy” he said.

Isiguzor said that the country’s democratic system, 20 years after, was still at experimental level because the nation was yet to appreciate the unique features that make democratic governance unique.

The NUJ President appealed to the security agencies in the state especially the police, to rise to the occasion and unmask those behind the shooting of The Sun Newspaper’s correspondent, Mr Emmanuel Adeyemi.

“The police must unmask them. This is not going to be one of those cases that they would usually sweep under the carpet. They must unmask those unknown gunmen and make them known to us.

“We will not accept anything less because it has come to the doorstep of the sun correspondent, nobody knows whose doorstep they would invade tomorrow morning or even this evening”, he added.

Adeiza Momohjimoh, State Council chairman of the union, in his address of welcome, expressed gratitude to God for saving the life of Adeyemi, whom he said went through a successful surgery, following the gun shot he received during the crisis.

Momohjimoh described the attack on Adeyemi as unfortunate as the “in the looting that preceded the#Endsars protests, had little or nothing to do with NUJ members moreso that the secretariat was not located close to any warehouse.

The NUJ Council chairman however expressed gratitude to God that no life was lost along members while Adeyemi who shot on his way to the Press Centre had a successful surgery and was recovering fast.” (NAN)

APC lacks authentic membership register says Buni

The ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) party has said it lacked authentic membership registration of its members nationwide.

Speaking at a meeting of APC Senate Caucus wednesday the party’s caretaker committee chairman Maimala Buni said since the membership registration exercise of 2013, the party has no authentic register in all the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.

Buni said some members who left the party in 2018 and joined the opposition party still have their names on the party’s register.

He added that many others who joined the party from 2014 to date do not have their names in the register.

Buni said the revalidation of the party’s membership register has become imperative to expunge names of those who had left the party and include those who have joined the party from 2014 to date in compliance with Article 9:4 of the Party Constitution.

He also disclosed that the caretaker committee has set up a high powered committee made up of eminent party leaders, legal practitioners and experts to study the reviewed Constitution and to make recommendations to the effect of the necessary amendments.

Tthe Chairman, APC caretaker committee, Governor Maimala Buni said the party’s reconciliation effort to settle aggrieved persons and factions has paid off, noting that the conflicts in most of the state chapters of the party have been settled.

Speaking at a meeting of APC Senate Caucus, Buni said the party now proudly paraded political heavy weights in various states who have either returned back to the party or freshly joined the party.

He said the defection of Ebonyi State Governor, Dave Umahi and several legislators of the state assembly was great milestones in the party’s restoration process.

“Many others have indicated interests to either return or join the party. In fact, I want to assure you all that APC will soon shock Nigeria’s political space with massive and unprecedented defections ever witnessed in the political history of our great country, and by the grace of God, APC will undoubtedly remain Nigeria’s leading political party,” he added.
