POHAN warns public officer holders against corruptly enriching themselves

The National President Public Office Holders Association (POHAN) Bashorun Moses Adeola Eseyin has admonished public office holders not think that while they in office they are being empowered to enrich themselves.

He spoke at the presentation  of Certificate of Credence  to Dr Solomon Femi Adeyemo on behalf of POHAN in recognition of his uncommon performance as a worthy and Patriotic Public Office Holder in Nigeria.Eseyin ask public office holders to ensure they adhere to the ethics of their job so as not to bring the Association to disrepute.

He explained,”What berthed this union is because of the lack of a unifying voice that can talk to power, who are the people concerned, the public office holders. “Hence the board in its wisdom came about the association and got relevant approval.”He said after assuming office in February their first case was that of a commissioner in Kogi State, that was alleged to have raped a lady.

“We came out to speak against it and we went further to constitute a committee to look into the matter.”We are there to speak to power, we are there to correct some of these misconceptions by the masses to ensure that the people representing them are doing what is expected.”He said before now the public office holders were not having a voice, saying that now that they are in place by next year many more of their activities would be visible. He said what NLC is to workers as an umbrella union is what POHAN is to public office holders as an umbrella union.

“Invariably POHAN is the parent union for all public office holders whether as a Governor, senator, house of representatives member down to a councillor in as much as you are holding a public office you are automatically a POHAN member by default. “We discovered Dr. Adeyemo’s approach to management as outstanding because everything about Governance boils down to management. “His desire to achieve excellence in his approach to duty attracted us to want to honour him.”Honor is given to whom honor is due and we are giving honor to him to encourage him.”We dont normally give award but certificate of credence to assure him that he is doing well to encourage him so that others after him can emulate him.”

Professor Yakubu gets senate’s confirmation as INEC chairman for another 5 years

The Senate on Tuesday confirmed the nomination of Prof Mahmood Yakubu for appointment as Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for another five years.
Yakubu was first appointed as INEC chair on October 21, 2015, by President Muhammadu Buhari.
He was reappointed after his first tenure  came to an end in October this year.
His confirmation followed the consideration of the report of the Senate Committee on INEC, chaired by Senator Kabiru Gaya (APC, Kano).

Senator Gaya, while presenting the committee’s report, said the nominee possessed the requisite qualifications for the INEC top job and therefore recommended his confirmation.
Opposition PDPsenators, who spoke after the presentation of the report, backed Yakubu’s nomination, saying that he’s unbiased and apolitical.
Senate Minority leader, Enyinnaya Abaribe commended Yakubu for the technological innovations he introduced at INEC, especially the transmission of election results to the central portal from polling units.
He’s moving in the right direction and we should give him the necessary support, said Senator Sandy Onor (PDP, Cross River).
Senate President Ahmad Lawan congratulated the nominee and wished him success in his second term.

Prof Yakubu had, during his screening last week, challenged the National Assembly to expeditiously consider and pass the electoral act to ensure seamless 2023 election.
According to him, the ammended electoral framework was germane to the conduct of 2023 general elections.
“We would like to see a situation where the electoral ammendment is expeditiously considered and passed and I am confident that this is going to be done.”
He said elections cannot be conducted in an atmosphere of uncertainty, adding that work on the electoral framework has to be finalized before 2023 elections would be conducted.

“I want to appeal to the Senate to please expedite work on the Electoral Act so that we can conduct elections in an atmosphere of certainty,” he said.
He said when the commission met with members of the Senate and House committees on the electoral matter in Lagos, the had extensive interaction where they submitted 78 areas of electoral ammendments adding that he also forwarded additional 13 areas of ammendment to the two committees.
“The earlier that is done the better for us. There is no way we can conduct election successfully without uncertainty unless the electoral legal framework id finalised for us to deploy our regulations and guidelines for the election.
“We have to develop the regulations and guidelines for the election for us to produce manuals for the training of adhoc staff, So it is critical.”
When asked what INEC would do differently he said
