Tokyo 2021 Olympics: Sports Minister appoints Coordinator, media consultant

The Honourable Minister of Youth and Sports Development, Mr. Sunday Akin Dare, has appointed a General Coordinator and Media Consultant as part of preparations for the National Trials towards the Tokyo 2021 Olympic Games.
Director of Press and Public Relations, Mohammed Manga in a statement issued in Abuja said the Minister announced the appointments on Monday in his office.

According to him, the appointments which takes immediate effect, were part of concerted efforts by the Federal Government for the success of the forthcoming global games.

The minister announced the appointment of Mr. Rotimi Obajimi who was a former technical director of the Athletics Federation of Nigeria and World Athletics Development Department Course Director for coaching.
He was also the General Coordinator of Team Nigeria to the 2008 African Athletics Championship in Adis Ababa, Ethiopia and 2010 in Nairobi as well as the 2003 All Africa Games Performance Consultant.

The Minister also appointed Mr. Dare Esan who is a veteran Sports journalist with special interest in Athletics as media consultant for the games.
Esan has covered the Olympics, FIFA World Cup and eight editions of the World Athletics Championship, adding that at various times up to 2015, he was a member of the World Athletics Media Study Group.
He is also the manager and editor of the Print Division at Complete Sports, Nigeria’s number one sports daily since 1995.

Sports Minister expresses optimism on successful outing at Tokyo Olympics

The Minister of Youth and Sport Development, Mr. Sunday Akin Dare, has expressed optimism that going by the performances of the athletes at the National Trial held in Lagos, the country is hopeful of a better outing at the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo, Japan


The Director of Press and Public Relations of the ministry Mohammed Manga quoted the minister at the close of the Olympic trials on Sunday at the Sports Complex of the Yaba College of Technology, Lagos.

According to him, “What is needed now, is more focus and determination by the athletes, coaches, technical advisers and staff so as to ensure podium appearances at the sports fiesta.

While commending the athletes for the commitment exhibited at the Trials, Mr. Dare urged them to avoid any act capable of hindering the realization of the goal of very successful outing.

“All athletes, coaches technical advisers and staff should shun any act capable of truncating our success at the feat”, he said.

Dare who called on the delegates to up the ante in their efforts towards making their Fatherland proud, noted that Nigeria, is among the best in the world ranking, as such he said, all hands should be on deck in the quest for laurels at the tournament.

Earlier, the President of Athletics Federation of Nigeria, Chief Tonobok Okowa commended the President Muhammadu-led Administration for the efforts being put together to ensure the well-being of the athletes to ensure success at Tokyo 2020

He assured that the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN), would do everything humanly possible to see that Nigeria records more podium appearances at the Games.

Ighalo visits Bello in Abuja, describes him as extraordinary bridge builder

Super Eagles Striker and former Manchester United Forward, Odion Jude Ighalo has also paid a solidarity visit on Governor Bello of Kogi State, describing him as an extraordinary bridge builder and unifier whose leadership style has been a source of hope to the Nigerian youth.

The footballer made the statement during courtesy on the Governor at his Abuja residence on Monday.

He commended the Governor for recognising the efforts, contributions, patriotism of the Ex-Super Eagles players by organising a world class reception for them in Lokoja in March, 2021.

He said such recognition and honour remained the biggest inspiration to the young athletes who want to represent Nigeria at any level.

While urging other leaders to emulate the Kogi Governor, Odion said he has demonstrated the character and quality of a leader who believe in the prosperity of the youth of this country. He commended the Governor for his various projects in Kogi state and appealed to him to continue to speak on behalf of the Nigerian youths.

Bello thanked the Eagle’s player for the visit which he described as heart warming, adding that Odion Ighalo just like every other Nigeria sports person has served the Nation diligently, made the nation proud and brought glory to her.

The Governor noted that the Nigerian forward has often displayed love and passion for the Nation on and off the field of play which he asserted was a duty and dedication expected of every loyal citizen of the country

He stressed that football just as other sports have been a veritable source of national integration and cohesion hence those who are actors in achieving such feat must be recognized and honored at every available opportunity

Bello while urging his visitor to continue to play his role in national growth, grass root sport development and other areas of interest, also charged citizens to remain united in the interest of the Nation

Nigeria will excel at Tokyo 2020 Olympic – Sports Ministry

The Federal Ministry of Youth and Sports Development has given the green light that the athletes currently slugging it out to book their places at the Olympic trials will make Nigerians proud with a better outing at the Olympic Games holding next month, in Tokyo Japan.

The Ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Engr. Nebeolisa Anako gave the assurance on Sunday in Lagos at the Sports Complex of the Yaba College of Technology, Lagos, venue of the Athletics Trials for the Olympic qualification.

According to him, the trials are part of the local camping, an initiative of the Ministry to enhance performance of the athletes and also a
platform to select the best athletes that will represent the country at the Games.

“So far some athletes have qualified from the trials with some records already broken. Going by the results so far, combined with those from the last National festival, we are hopeful that the athletes are going to perform better than the previous Olympics” he said

Speaking further, the Permanent Secretary disclosed that local camping of athletes has commenced and will continue till the time of departure to Japan.

Engr. Nebeolisa stated further that there are arrangements for more camping of the athletes so as to keep them in top shape before the begining of the Games.
